Radiant Floor Heating System is a luxurious home feature that helps improve the comfort of a newly built or renovated house. Though the budget for radiant floor heating is generally more than that of traditional radiators, the benefit of it can overshadow the hassle and cost arising from installation.
There are two types of radiant floor heating system: water-based and electricity based. Both of them can provide warmth in room by supplying constant heat under the floor. Water-based system run hot water through pipes underneath to create heat while electricity-based system generate heat by heating the wiring beneath the floor.
Traditional radiators needs to reach a high temperature(about 60-70 Celsius degree) to heat up a room, but with radiant floor heating system, the pipe or wiring below only need to reach 30 Celsius degree to make the room cozy and warm for you. The temperature may vary due to different floor type. As a result, the monthly energy bill will be more tolerable to you.
Besides, traditional radiators are normally installed along the wall to avoid using too much room space. As a result, the running radiator always heat up the area around it first and the further an area from it, the less heat can be transmitted. Often, this will create obvious temperature fluctuation even within the same room. To make the whole room comfortable, the radiator temperature has to be high enough, which would be a great waste of energy. radiant floor heating evenly provide heat up from the floor, causing no temperature difference between areas.
With radiant heating, you can save energy for environment and have a better look at the sight of energy bill.
Since radiant floor heating is placed under floor, no one wants to use a crowbar just because of a little glitch of the system. Nowadays, most radiant floor heating comes with state of art controlling method. It either uses WiFi or on-the-wall thermostat(both manual and programmable) to keep it running without human involvement. You can also set an automatic turn-off time at night to avoid further unnecessary energy loss.
Radiant floor heating takes up less room compared with traditional radiators. You will have more choice in house decoration style if there is no such a big thing in your way. And you may notice that public place in cold region are equipped with fence-surrounded radiator, like kindergarten. With fence, it takes up too many space but can protect people from some burn accident. With radiant floor, this is no longer a dilemma. More importantly, it can be used with various surface like laminate, carpet, tile, vinyl,etc, providing they are not below-grade product.
However, radiant floor heating is not perfect. It also have their disadvantages:
1: The installation requires higher cost and more time; normally it can’t be finished within one day;
2: It will raise up the total height of the floor. If you need extra insulation board beneath the system to guarantee the heat goes up rather than down, then you may need to take height issue into consideration;
In conclusion, we would still recommend installing radiant floor heating system if you are about to renovate the floor. You will lift up all the floor anyway. In the long term, the comfort and saving of this system will be a great advantage.
